10 Things The New Testament Says About The Believer’s Heart.
Updated: Feb 6, 2022

We have all heard it before. The heart of man is desperately wicked. This idea comes from what God said about the heart of unsaved man in Jeremiah 17. The New Testament opens up with the death of Jesus and then the resurrection, and lo and behold- something new happens! A New Covenant is made that ensures that the believer is born again spiritually and receives a new spirit and a new heart.
It is a fact that, we as believers, have a new heart. We have been born again with a new spirit. We have been placed in Christ. Let’s look at some New Testament Scripture about the new heart the believer receives at salvation.
The believer has an obedient heart. Rom 6:16-18 “Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness? But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.”
Your heart has been consecrated/separated for God. Rom 2:29 “But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.”
As a believer, your heart contains the word of faith. Rom 10:8 “But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach;”
It is with your heart that you believe the Gospel and are made the righteousness of God by faith. Rom 10:9-10 “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”
You perform God’s will from your heart. Eph 6:6 “Not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart;“
It is the Spirit of Christ in your heart that recognizes and calls out to God as your Father. Gal 4:6 “And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.”
It is your heart that was dark, but God shined His message into and transformed it through Jesus Christ. 2Co 4:6 “For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.”
God put the Holy Spirit into your heart. Does He live in wicked places? 2Co 1:22 “Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.”
The love of God is shed abroad in your heart with The Holy Spirit. Rom 5:5 “And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.”
His laws are written on your new heart. Heb 8:10-13 “For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people: And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest. For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more. In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away.”
side note: The OT Law is not written on your heart as a believer. See below.
As believers we are dead to the OT law. “Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God.”-Rom 7:4
So which laws are written on our hearts? The ones that dwell in us. “And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment. And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.” -1John 3:23-24
